Steven McLeish: Spoken Word Artist/Evangelist
Spoken artist, youth pastor, and evangelist, Steven McLeish, grew up surrounded by the gang culture. Add dyslexia and ADHD to the mix and you end up with a man who had much to overcome before he could succeed. Born with a creative spirit and a sharp wit, Steven gathered those struggles and pushed forward with a confidence that was instilled at birth.
He was introduced to Christianity as a youth, but had huge doubts and big questions. He remembers doodling these words on a school folder, “Heaven doesn’t want me and Hell is afraid I’ll take over.” Inspired by the life and death of a young girl who was ‘sold out’ for Jesus Christ, Steven began to look upward to answers. He realized that even though he was a misfit on this earth, he had found his place in the Kingdom.
Steven founded a hip-hop group called Defeated, which sparked his desire for evangelism. He studied acting and performance, along with being heavily involved in youth ministry. But life isn’t easy. Neither is ministry. Steven was diagnosed with bi-polar. The depression, anxiety, and self-doubt crept into his life. His marriage began to crumble, debt piled up, he was unemployed and about to be homeless. He had this passion, though, that would just not allow him to give up. He was often reminded of a dream that he had when he was 15. This dream portrayed him as an evangelist on a television show. He had no idea how that could ever come to pass, but it never left his mind. One night he wrote a Poem called Grace. It opened so many doors. He was asked to speak at churches, Christian and secular events, radio, newspapers, magazines, along with providing him with an opportunity to submit his video to a television show in the United States.
“What we avoid, the enemy invades,” states Steven. His prayer is for mxtvUK to be light in the dark places on TV. And he believes that God is about to do something with social media that He has never done before. It will make the world take notice that God is real.
Steven is a youth pastor at one of the largest churches in Scotland. His wife, Charis, is an Enter Manager for a training provider. They currently reside in Glasgow, Scotland.
