Living Counter Cultural

It hardly takes 10 minutes out in the world to know something is wrong. As a culture, we have continued on a very dangerous descend to darkness. We live in a world where even Jesus followers are bending the Gospel to make others feel comfortable. We live in a world where dysfunction is praised, not restored. Where chaos rings rampant and where peace is too still and quiet to even find in the fast paced busyness of our lives.

In Romans 12:2 it says, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

That’s a high call and expectation that God has for His people. That we would not conform to look like this world. That we would walk in the light, in victory and ultimately experience abundant life, not circle the drain with the rest of the world to darkness. That as believers in Him we would conform to look more like Jesus and less and less like the world. Not the other way around.

Satan is the father of lies and the ruler of this world. He will stop at nothing to quench the goodness of God and hold you back from what God has designed for you. He will do whatever can be done to silence you. To leave you defeated. He will work aggressively to stop you from fulfilling the call God has on your life. He will work tirelessly to drain you of every ounce of confidence you have in God and His word. And as much as I hate to admit it, he is really good at it through many different ways.

We are easily swayed with everything from distraction through social media, to comparison, to sin, to shame. We are so tempted to go with what the culture accepts and praises. Even seemingly small things like busyness where there is no room for Jesus can pull us away from the call of God on our lives.

So many of us living in 2018 define our standards and value system by the culture, by media, by advertising, and even by watered down Christianity. We seek a comfortable cushy life where Sunday attendance is enough to sneak us into the back door of heaven.

If the enemy can keep you distracted. Keep you silenced. And influence you into conforming to look just like the world, then he has won. His job is done. Have you ever thought about that? The enemy wants your mouth shut. Your faith destroyed. Your life in shambles. And your world in total and complete chaos.

BUT with the Holy Spirit living inside of you, you are a weapon. You are fully equipped to extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one like it says in Ephesians 6. The one who is in you is GREATER than he that is in the world. It says in John 4:4, “But you belong to God, my dear children. You have already won a victory over those people, because the Spirit who lives in you is greater than the spirit who lives in the world.”

We are the very vessels of Jesus walking through this world. We are a generation filled with power, creativity, talent, knowledge, innovation and passion. The devil just doesn’t want you to know that, because then he is in trouble and his work has no power. I pray that we would not let our voices be silenced by evil. That we would be bold in declaring the good news through the way we live our lives. Since I came to find Jesus as my #1 everything, living counter culturally was the only option. Because the only option to live an abundant, passionate and fulfilled life of peace, joy and purpose is by saying yes to Jesus over the culture every day.
