Live Forever

This past week, a local high school community where we live has been grieving the death of one of its star athletes who died in his sleep after telling his mom one evening that he wasn’t feeling well. His mom, doing what every mom would do, told him to lay down for a bit and she would check on him to see if he was feeling better. When she went in to check on him, he was non-responsive. Her son had passed away in his sleep. Like other stories we have heard in the news around our nation in recent years, sometimes young people die unexpectedly with no warning or signs of health concerns. We know several families who knew this young man and his family. There have been many tears shed and many questions asked. My heart hurts for them – and my prayers are for them.

As you might imagine, then, I found myself pierced with intense emotion and hope upon viewing The Afters’ latest music video of their song, “Live on Forever”. Suddenly before me was a visual and audible expression of what we are promised as Christians… our hope, our truth, our reality about this life we live here on earth and beyond in heaven. I was spellbound as I watched the man in the video rise up from the pavement and run through a beautiful world with no boundaries. As the video continued, the story unfolds –perhaps -to similar real life events linked within the song’s lyrics. It reminded me of other loved ones and friends that have passed away before me… and the hope for those who were Christians (like the young man who passed away suddenly this past week).

Dark days are gonna go away

They won’t have the final say

These bones were always gonna fade

Cause we were made for another place

The moment of our final breath

When all our fears are put to rest

Every tear will disappear

Heaven is real

We’re gonna live on forever… Forever… Forever (The Afters, “Live On Forever”)

A friend of mine says that we are walking around in “flesh suits.” He expounds that these “flesh suits” are what one’s soul wears during our time here on earth, but it is just a temporal thing and the more important thing - the eternal thing - is when we finally get rid of these flesh suits. Friends, The Afters have provided us an artistic visual to give proper emotion to the truth in the words of their song… if you know you are a Christian, you get to claim this hope! We can sing with them – We’re gonna live on forever, forever! If you aren’t sure, then I encourage you to talk to someone you know and trust who is a Christian. If you don’t have someone you feel comfortable talking with, then contact MXTV. MXTV staff members are willing to talk with you about what it means to be a Christian and the hope found and expressed in this video. Issues like this are too important… we must be able to say with confidence, like the Afters’ song does – We’re gonna live on forever

“Lord, remind me how brief my time on earth will be. Remind me that my days are numbered, and that my life is fleeing away. My life is no longer than the width of my hand. An entire lifetime is just a moment to you; human existence is but a breath. We are merely moving shadows, and all our busy rushing ends in nothing. We heap up wealth for someone else to spend. And so, Lord, where do I put my hope? My only hope is in you.” Psalm 39: 4-7 (NLT)

“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 (NLT)

“He will remove all of their sorrows, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. For the old world and its evils are gone forever.” Revelation 21:4 (NLT)
