Superstition

It’s funny to me how I see people get so shook up about little superstitions. It’s funny because I used to consider all of these superstitions. They didn’t rule my life in any way, but I definitely paused and thought. I’ve turned my truck around for many black cats, thrown lots of salt over my shoulder, and completely refused to move mirrors.

That all kind of makes me laugh now. I think my faith and love for Christ has simply trumped all these trivial things. I don’t see anything wrong with talking about them or even observing them if that makes you feel better. For me though, I rest in the thought that His will is the one and only thing in my life that counts at all. I find more than a little comfort in knowing He has this all figured out for ME. All I have to do is listen to the Spirit, look for Him, and obey. I’m not real good at that yet, but I am trying. Don’t worry, pray. Don’t grovel, confess. Quit making excuses, repent.

All that is really easy to write in this little note, but not near as easy to live day to day. That is what we’ve been asked to do though. In 3 of the 4 gospels (Mathew, Mark, Luke, and John) Jesus tells His disciples if they want to follow Him, they must take up there cross daily. To truly follow him, we have to die every morning when we wake up. Not just on Sundays, not Wednesday and Sunday, not when we feel spiritual, not when we’re scared; EVERY SINGLE DAY. I don’t know anybody that can do this. But we have to try. It needs to be etched in our hearts so that it bleeds out in everything we do. Full commitment.

That sounds a little crazy. Maybe even a little radical. What’s wrong with that? What are you scared of? He will take care of you. A little scorn from the world is considered a blessing if it’s because of His name

24Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If any of you wants to be My follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross, and follow Me.

Matthew 16:24 (NLT)

34Then, calling the crowd to join His disciples, He said, “If any of you wants to be My follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross, and follow Me.

Mark 8:34 (NLT)

23Then He said to the crowd, “If any of you wants to be My follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross daily, and follow Me.

Luke 9:23 (NLT)

That seems pretty clear to me…now listen to what He say.

38If you refuse to take up your cross and follow Me, you are not worthy of being Mine.39If you cling to your life, you will lose it; but if you give up your life for Me, you will find it.

Matthew 10:38-39 (NLT)
